AC Modules

The AC module is the generator side of a legacy SCR house — the control chassis that regulates each generator's voltage, synchronizes incoming sets to the bus, & divides kW & kVAR between engines so the rig's power plant pulls together as one machine. ETSCO supplies replacement AC modules & module components for (Ross Hill & Hill Hayes) style systems.

When an AC module drifts or fails, the trouble reads like an engine problem — sets that fight each other, breakers that trip on reverse power, a bus that sags when the drawworks picks up — while the root cause sits quietly in the generator control cubicle.

What the AC module does

Each generator cubicle in an analog SCR house carries an AC module handling four jobs at once: excitation control that holds the generator at rated voltage; synchronizing control that brings an incoming set onto the bus at the right instant; load sharing that balances active kW & reactive kVAR between all sets on line; & the protective functions — over & under voltage, over & under frequency, & reverse power — that keep a sick engine from taking the rig's whole power plant down with it. Because the module works every hour the rig makes power, wear shows up as drift long before it shows up as failure. A module that needs the potentiometers “chased” every tour is a module asking to be replaced.
